Photographic Experience
I especially enjoy taking pictures of people. The first photograph I remember taking, at age 5, was of my family in front of our Lincoln, Nebraska home. Then my grandfather gave me a simple 120 format camera, and I have enjoyed photography ever since. Law school and litigating business disputes in Los Angles took over my life for many years. Yet, during that time I was inspired by a style of photography that I had never seen before, and started taking pictures again. These original Los Angeles images, along with recent photographs were completed and printed in Seattle during the past year and comprise my currently exhibiting work. I live in Seattle with my partner Andrew, and for the past year have been working as an artist and photographer.

With regard to photography, I am interested in: how a single photo suggests an entire story line; capturing private and intimate moments, behind the scenes; capturing thoughtfulness and emotion in still images; capturing the complex forms and beauty of the human body; and photographing my subjects as characters.

Current and New Work

Artistically, I am focused on producing intimate, emotional images of people, with a sense of eroticism. This work challenges the viewer to ponder "what just happened," "what is about to happen," and to formulate ideas about the character's emotions and thoughts. I say "characters" because in the process of creating images, I, as photographer and director, think of my subject as not just as a person, body or shape, but also as a character, which aids in the storytelling process. Recently I began exploring the idea of incorporating two or more people into the scene, adding the elements of tension and interpersonal conflict within the images. It is the current direction of my new work.

Technique

Images are first captured using a simple Polaroid camera using instant film, either 600 integral film or 669 or 690 peel-apart film, which is then digitally scanned. The dominant color, motion, blur and grain are true to the original Polaroid print, while other photographic elements such as hue, contrast, and levels are manipulated digitally. Archival prints are then produced, matted, signed, and framed.
